Tara Calico
September 20, 1998
Tara Calico disappeared near her home in Belen, New Mexico on September 20 when she was riding her bike on the New Mexico state road 47. Tara and her mother, Patty Doel biked this road almost every morning until her mom stopped because she felt she was being stalked by a motorist. Patty wanted Tara to carry mase on her but she rejected that choice.
On the morning of her disappearance, Tara had told her mother that if she was not back from riding at noon than to come and get her because she was going to play tennis with her boyfriend at 12:30.
Patty went to go find Tara when she did not return at the time she said she would. Her mom went searching the bike route she always goes on. She did not find her daughter but she found pieces of her Sony Walkman and cassette tape.
When calling the police to explain what happened and that she can not find her daughter, they basically turned her down saying that she was 19-years-old and there was nothing they could do about it because she was an adult.
Someone called in anonymously and stated that they might have seen Calico that day and that a truck was slowly following her but that Calico had in earphones.
On July 15, 1989 a Polaroid picture was found in a parking lot of a convenience store in Florida. In the picture, two unidentified people were gagged and banned. Some people believe that Tara is the one in the picture, others believe it was a set up for attention to the case.
The women who found the photo, stated that when she was in the store, she had noticed a man with a mustache sitting in a white windowless cargo van. When the police were contacted, they set up a road block to catch him but were never able to identify him.
Also, according to Polaroid officials, the picture had to be taken in May 1989 because the film that was used, was discontinued after that date.
The photo went public and almost immediately the mother of the boy contacted police stating who she thought was in the picture was son. Michael Henley disappeared in April 1988 when his family was camping in New Mexico. Henley wandered off from his family and his remains were found at Zuni Mountains in June 1990 seven miles from his family's campsite and 75 miles from where Calico disappeared. Calico and Henley's cases never were connected by police.
Twenty years after the Polaroid photo was found, pictures of a boy were sent to the Port St. Joe police chief, David Barnes. He received two letters, postmarked June 10 and August 10, 2009, from Albuquerque, New Mexico. One letter contained a photo, printed on copy paper, of a young boy with sandy brown hair. Someone had drawn a black band in ink on the photo, over the boy's mouth, as if it were covered in tape as in the 1989 picture. The second letter contained an original image of the boy.
On August 12, The Star newspaper in Port St. Joe received a third letter, also postmarked in Albuquerque on August 10 and depicting the same image, of a boy with black marker drawn over his mouth. The boy has not been confirmed to be the same one as in the previous photo. None of the letters contained a return address or a note indicating the child's identity, making the officials there believe it may have something to do with the disappearance of Tara Calico.
Over the years, multiple photos were found claiming to be Calico. One was found
at a construction site in California. It was a girl with tape covering her mouth and
behind her was a piece of stripped blue fabric similar to the cargo van seen in
Florida. The film was not available until June 1989.
The other photo was a women who had gauze covering her mouth, more
gauze covering her eyes and large black glasses sitting by a man in an Amtrak
train.
Both of these photos never truly identified Calico.
Tara Calico has been missing since September 20, 1998. Today she would have been 48-years-old. No arrests have been made and the case remains open. In October 2013, a six-person task force started to re-investigate Calico's disappearance.
